Twitter is now taking a strong look at it's follower metric. The co-founder of Twitter, Ev Williams is considering adding a more dynamic and accurate metric to help users gauge both influence and true count. This video discusses it in detail.
The issue many social networks run into is the delicate balance between simple user experience and generating revenue. Most networks are only really able to generate revenue if they can provide content creators or publishers with accurate metrics. This allows them to determine whether advertising is worth the investment or not.
Twitter has started to realize that the follower count alone is not enough to sell publishers on advertising. These numbers are quickly being manipulated by 3rd party applications and automated systems to artificially inflate influence.
The solution? Ed Williams seems to believe offering a different method of evaluating your Twitter peers is in order and I am inclined to agree. Allowing users to determine influence based on multiple factors, such as follower count, retweets and total reach will make astounding strides for potential advertisers.
The shift to a broader and more accurate metric will also help users improve their experience. It will allow them to better filter through the Twitter robots from real people. Although the change will be uncomfortable at first, ultimately it will help separate the good tweeters from the bad.
