Over the past few months, Bern University of Applied Sciences, one of the RETRIEVE partners, has developed the first prototype of a digital platform dedicated to supporting end-of-life photovoltaic panel management. The platform includes a Digital Product Passport (DPP) and is designed to support circularity in the PV sector.
Built with insights from nearly 70 European PV value chain experts—including RETRIEVE project partners and additional key industry stakeholders —the platform is more than just a technical tool. A business model has also been conceptualized to support its long-term viability.
Key Aspects of the Platform:
🔹 Comprehensive services:
The platform is designed to streamline data collection, PV system tracking, and encourages cross-sector collaboration. With an integrated marketplace, it will open avenues for the resale of recycled materials and the reuse of PV panels.
🔹 Digital Product Passport (DPP):
The DPP acts as a centralized data hub, providing recyclers and other actors with essential information to optimize recycling and material recovery processes.
🔹 Technological workflow:
• Role-Based access control: tailored access ensures that each stakeholder — from administrators to recyclers — interacts with the platform securely and efficiently.
• Secure data transmission & user-friendly visualizations: robust encryption and intuitive dashboards make the platform both secure and accessible.
• Modular, scalable architecture & API integration: designed to evolve with future industry needs, our platform will support seamless integration with external systems and additional services as we grow.
What’s Next?
The current prototype is just the beginning. The team at BFH plans to:
• Enhance the platform using real-world data from European PV stakeholders
• Open platform to external users for hands-on testing and feedback
• Finalize a business plan for full-scale implementation
