Alt Text - Digital Accessibility - April 2026
Alt text — or alternative text — is a short, descriptive text attribute added to an image’s code that conveys its meaning, purpose and/or context. It serves two main purposes: it is read aloud by screen readers for users with visual impairments, and it appears in place of an image if it fails to load. Alt text should not just tell what’s happening in an image or graphic, but provide context on how the image relates to the page content.
