Living in Indonesia, a diverse society comprised of hundreds of ethnicities, the potential for meeting and feeling comfortable with someone from a different ethnicity is certainly enormous. Is falling in love and then marrying someone from a different ethnicity "haram"? According to the requirements and pillars of marriage (especially in Islam; I'm less familiar with other religions), there are no ethnicities. This means that a marriage is valid even if you're from different ethnicities. In fact, God Himself created humans from different ethnicities so that they could get to know each other, right? What about marriage laws? I've googled and found no ethnicity requirement in the Indonesian Marriage Law. But the norms that apply in our society aren't just religion and the state; there are customs that (still) bind in some regions.
