If you want to add some text to your video's with Blender, you can do this by making a PNG file with a transparent background and then adding it in Blender with the Video Sequence Editor.

For making the PNG, you can use software like Gimp or Photoshop. Since Gimp is free, I used that one.

Important note: Make sure you set the frame rate in Blender to the same one as your video! You can usually find your video's frame rate with your media player.
For MPlayer: Go to menu File, then Properties. Then click on tab Details.
For VLC Player: Go to menu Tools, then Media Information. Then click on tab Codec.

Software used in this tutorial:
Blender 2.74
Gimp 2.8.14

Important note: Adding text in the Video Sequence Editor without the help of any outside software is now possible from Blender 2.76 onwards. Although it has some limitations, it will be sufficient in some cases. The method in this tutorial is also still possible and currently has more possibilities.
