This video will describe how to test a compressor (non-inverter compressor)
Common Symptoms of a failed compressor include:
Freezer & Refrigerator too warm
Buzzing noise from compressor (constant or periodic noise)
Refrigerator breaker trips
Interior and exterior (evaporator & condenser fans) are running, but compressor is not.
NOTE: Some new model GE refrigerators have what is called an inverter compressor. These compressors run at variable speeds based on the cooling demands and have a different testing procedure than is shown here.
You can identify if you have a variable speed compressor easily because it will not have relays attached to the side of the compressor, but instead will either have a control board attached to the side of the compressor or simply a small white plug with 3 wires leading to it.
Testing a Compressor (no inverter)
This test is performed with the POWER OFF.
The steps to access your compressor's terminals are as follows:
Remove the rear lower panel behind your refrigerator by removing the 4-5 screws holding it in place.
Remove the relay / capacitor from the left side of the black compressor by removing the metal bar holding the relay to the compressor. The bar has hooks that hold it in place on the compressor.
Pull the relay and capacitor away from the compressor by gently jiggling it as you're pulling it off.
0:05sec - Unplug your fridge
0:21sec - Meter set to Ohm setting
0:35sec - testing the motor windings for resistance
1:49sec - testing the motor for short to ground
