Here is a great wood carving project for beginners - basic wooden spoons.

We used Jarrah for this project, however good options for spoon carving include Maple, Olive wood, Paper Birch & Camphor Lauren as they are solid, natural woods with a fibrous texture.

Additionally, you can seal your wooden spoons with milk. Simply dunk into a vat of skimmed milk, bring to the boil for a couple of minutes, let it cool then remove the spoon and wipe it down. The casein protein in milk will create a seal. Alternatively treat with a non toxic/ edible oil such as linseed or a more durable option is tung oil.

If you don't have large woodworking equipment such as a bandsaw like we have used in this video, you can carve the entire spoon with a Ball Gouge or Mini Carver.
