Umemulo is a traditional Zulu coming-of-age ceremony for women that celebrates their transition into womanhood and readiness for marriage. Typically held around age 21, the ritual often involves a week of seclusion and preparation, followed by a ceremony where a cow is slaughtered, its fat is worn as a symbol of purity, and the young woman performs the ukusina dance with a spear. It is a celebration of a girl's virginity and good behavior, and a way for the community to bestow blessings and gifts upon her.
