Interframe compression’s weaknesses include the fact that errors in one frame can affect the decoding of subsequent frames, leading to a chain of errors throughout the video stream. Interframe-encoded video may not allow for random access, meaning that decoding a particular frame may require reference to previous frames. This method reduces file size by exploiting the temporal redundancy between frames of a video sequence. It works by identifying and encoding only the changes between successive frames, rather than storing the entire frame data independently. Interframe encoding relies on the concept of motion estimation, which involves identifying the motion vectors that represent the movement of objects between frames. These motion vectors are used to predict the current frame based on the previous frame, eliminating the need to store the entire current frame. The remaining information, known as the residual signal, represents the differences between the predicted and actual frames and is stored more efficiently.
