From Keyboard Cat and I Can Has Cheezburger to internet icons like Grumpy Cat and Lil Bub, cats have ruled the internet for decades. But now we’ve entered a new era of cat content: bizarre AI-generated videos flooding TikTok and YouTube.

These videos — often depicting surreal cat families, darkly emotional storylines, and uncanny animation — have become massively popular online. But why are they so addictive? And why do they feel… kind of disturbing?

Host of American Hysteria Chelsey Weber-Smith joins us to unpack the phenomenon she calls a “Kitty Horror Picture Show." In the first part, we talk about the history of cats on the internet, the rise (and review) of these new AI-generated "cute cat" videos, and the similarities to Elsagate back in 2014.

Then we go even deeper into internet history with one of the earliest viral cat controversies: Bonsai Kittens.

Our guest Chelsey Weber-Smith hosts American Hysteria, a show that explores the fantastical thinking and irrational fears of Americans. Check it out here or wherever you listen to podcasts.
