Electrification: Columbia Biomedical Research Building
The Columbia University Biomedical Research Building is the first purpose-built, all-electric academic research lab building in New York City. Faced with the task of electrifying a complex facility with a small footprint, architects and environmental designers at KPF used innovative methods to achieve net-zero performance for the building. By addressing the building as a holistic system instead of its individual components, occupant comfort and carbon emissions can be managed more efficiently.
A key project in the Electrification chapter of KPF Review’s Carbon Issue, the lab building is just one example of how KPF is pushing the built environment towards a greener future. Eliminating the need to burn fossil fuels on site has the power to transform cities as larger energy systems undergo their own sustainability revolution. Harnessing complex, mixed-use projects with electrified systems enables KPF to develop strategic designs that ultimately prioritize occupant health and wellbeing.
