Then Compaq displaced the blue giant IBM. They then captured the PC market, reached the peak of their development... and just when Forbes named Compaq Company of the Year, they squandered all their polymers and collapsed three years later.

SERIES SUMMARY: THE HISTORY OF COMPAQ COMPUTERS
1981 - IBM releases a computer based on the new IBM PC (Personal Computer) architecture: an excellent combination of size, price, software, and capabilities. A major success.
1982 - Compaq begins its market expansion. The Compaq Portable is released, a compact, modern personal computer fully compatible with IBM PC software (then the market leader).
1984 - Compaq enters the desktop personal computer market with the Compaq Deskpro. That same year, a turning point occurs: PC sales equal those of mainframes. 1985 - Compaq goes public, shares are traded on the NYSE, raising $57 million.
1986 - Compaq sells 150,000 PCs, worth over $300 million. Afterward, it sets another record: it becomes the youngest company to be added to the Fortune 500.
1987 - The second-generation Compaq Portable is released in 1986, followed by the third generation in 1987.
1988 - IBM's position is shaken from this point on, as Compaq, Dell, and many other manufacturers receive new processors from Intel before IBM.
1989 - IBM releases a new generation of IBM PS/2 microcomputers (1987) - an attempt to regain market, sector, and business leadership.
1990 - Compaq responds to IBM with a powerful blow: nine IBM PC clone makers band together to defeat IBM. Compaq leads the conspiracy. With Microsoft and Intel involved
1991 - To everyone's surprise, Compaq posts losses. CEO Rod Canyon is fired.
1992 - New CEO Eckhard Pfeiffer charts a new course for the company. However, the marketing strategy remains essentially unchanged.
1994 - The internet is exploding, the world is changing. Selling computers online? What nonsense!!!!!!!?!!? But Dell Computers thinks differently.
1995 - Dell opens an online computer store, signaling a changing market.
1996-1998 - The market is growing, everyone is growing, and Compaq seems to be becoming the leader in all PC sectors: laptops, office workstations, small and large servers – THIS IS A SUCCESS!!!!!!
1998 - This year, a strange situation unfolds: Compaq is the leader, everyone knows it's the coolest company. But within the company, there are a ton of problems.
1999 - Compaq faces a serious lawsuit and accusations against the company's management, and CEO Pfeiffer is fired.
2000 - The dot-com crash depresses PC sales, ruining the overall picture. It's now clear to everyone that Compaq is in trouble: declining sales, declining computer quality, and lawsuits. Meanwhile, Dell grows 55% in 1997.
2001 - Compaq and Hewlett-Packard merger (acquisition) is finalized.
2002 - The deal is finalized, and Compaq no longer exists. Just three years ago, they were the leader.
