Turning a railroad car into a comfortable housing
Sometimes in our suburban plots you can find old cars that are adapted to mini-cottages with varying degrees of ingenuity. The retired lieutenant colonel of the American army went a little further and for 8 months transformed the rare vehicle purchased at the sale not just into a “temporary building”, but into a small house that can be leased.
Transformed car for almost 80 years. It was built in 1942, and during the Second World War it served as a kitchen. Army chefs cooked food inside for American soldiers traveling to Europe. In 1955, the car was sent to the reserve base, but in the 1970s it was returned to service as a mobile command post of the US Air Force Strategic Command. It was finally written off in 1988, and in 2005 was sold at auction.
The new owner, a retired lieutenant colonel of the American Army, transported the car to Maryville, Tennessee, located near the Great Misty Mountains National Park. The picturesque environment prompted the owner to turn the car into a small house that could be rented to tourists visiting the park.
The work took eight months. Externally, the kitchen car almost did not change, retaining the appearance of the Second World War. Inside it was decorated with plain and whitewashed wood, which added to the interior comfort. The house is able to take four guests. They have a double bed, a sofa bed, a kitchen with a dining area, a bathroom, and a work area that serves as an office. Numerous windows not only fill the room with natural light, but also allow you to enjoy the panoramas of the Misty Mountains.
