How does a cruise ship work? All the secrets of the MSC Seaview

With a gross tonnage of over 153,000 tons and a length of 323 meters, the MSC Seaview is one of the largest cruise ships in the world. It can accommodate up to 6,500 passengers and crew, an impressive number that makes it a veritable floating city. To put this into perspective, 70% of Italian municipalities have a population smaller than the Seaview's. This steel giant is capable of sailing the seas and oceans 365 days a year, non-stop. And it's a source of true Italian pride, given that it was entirely designed in our country and built at the historic Fincantieri shipyards in Monfalcone, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, where it has generated employment for thousands of people with approximately 10 million man-hours.
Everyone can admire it when it docks in Italian ports, especially since it's hard to miss with its 18 decks and 74 meters of height. Many will have come aboard, for a week's vacation around the Mediterranean or, perhaps, a six-month round-the-world tour. But even those who haven't been so fortunate can still get a glimpse of the cabins, restaurants, decks, and pools on the MSC website, where photos, videos, and renderings of all kinds are available. However, no one, except the crew, has ever had access to the ship's most secret areas. That's because the bridge, engine room, and technical rooms on the Seaview are highly secure, protected by impenetrable security systems.
Yet we managed to get our cameras into all those areas you'll never see on a ship, even venturing into what experts call the "underwater." The part of the excavation beneath the waterline, where all the vital systems of this marine bison are located, from the diesel engines to the drinking water generators, including the propellers, purifiers, and large electric engines.
