With all the expertly crafted distractions in the world, it seems we all have at least some ADHD.

When you can check email, scroll through your newsfeed, or binge a new season of your favorite show on Netflix (to say nothing of anxious self-talk), how can you muster the discipline to focus on your own projects?

How do you actually get anything done?

Try this: Allow yourself to get distracted, but only by your own projects. The way to do this is to have several projects going at once—in different media, different genres, different lengths, and different levels of difficulty.

When you get bored of one, work on another for a while. If you’re lucky enough to be working on a novel, an animated cartoon, a sketch, a new stand-up bit, a radio play, several social media posts, and a screenplay, you have a fighting chance to compete with email, newsfeeds, Netflix, and even your own thoughts and emotions.

A lot of professional creative people use this method—it works.

Eventually, you’ll hit a stride with one project, you’ll get in a zone on another. If you keep it up, periodically you’ll finish something, and you’ll see you can be really productive—ADHD be damned.
