Final Fantasy IX - Burmecia - Retrowave / Lo-Fi Remix
Sunday is here, and what a doozy! There are so many things I want to say in this post; about this remix, about the original tune, about Final Fantasy IX. Where to start?
First of all, this remix. I actually wanted to make this tune a few months ago. It's one of my favorite tracks from the FFIX OST. Back when I made Freya's theme remix I was originally thinking of this one; now I feel like a whole story has been told between this tune, Freya's Theme and Beatrix's theme. It's the story of the fall of Burmecia as experienced by Zidane and friends.
Now, taking a step back from the story told by these tunes, let me talk briefly about what I did with the remix. My original plan was to make remix with no percussion at all, as an ambient retrowave/synthwave track. Towards the end of the edit, I decided to throw in a very basic beat during the chorus, an edited 505 sample. Overally way different energy than my regular remixes.
Next, the original tune. One of the things I love about this game is the attention to detail in the sound track. Listen to this tune and then my Freya's Theme remix back-to-back, and let me know if you notice anything. Better yet, if you listen to this tune, then Freya's Theme and finally Ratley's Theme from the original OST, you should explicitly understand what I'm getting at here. FFIX reuses themes over and over again, usually following a common narrative.
And lastly about Final Fantasy IX -- the fall of Burmecia. The story I've told through Freya's Theme, Beatrix's Theme and finally Burmecia's Theme (ugh, themes) is a little bit out of order here. We should have started with Burmecia, Freya's fallen homeland. Freya, opened up by the loss of her Kingdom reveals her backstory regarding Sir Fratley, which appeared in my remix of Freya's Theme. Finally, the end of the Burmecia chapter at the hands of Beatrix plays out in Beatrix's Theme. No spoilers to those who haven't experienced it, but please watch all vids to get the full experience!
