In the world of test and measurement, a HAL (or Hardware Abstraction Layer) is a software layer that separates the hardware of the test system from the application software. It provides a consistent development interface to the underlying hardware which helps developers create software independently of the specific hardware details. This makes it easier for test software developers to create software that can run on different hardware configurations. A well-designed HAL also may offer additional features that help with development or debugging such as instrument interfaces, error handling, report generation, hardware simulation or logging.
