Day 12 of 42 in Europe...
Today we climbed to the top of the very scenic and equally unpronounceable Gaztelugatxe island off the coast of Biscay.
If it looks familiar, that's because it is the location used for a castle in Game of Thrones. I fell asleep during the first episode both times I tried to watch Thrones, but I can confirm this is the location after finding some clips on YouTube.
IRL, at the top you will find the San Juan de Gaztelugatxe hermitage dedicated to John the Baptist, which dates from the 9th or 10th century. After an exhausting climb back to civilization, it was time to head to Mundaka. This town is apparently internationally renowned for its surfing scene. While I will remember it most for its lack of air conditioning, it is the perfect little sleepy surf town of only about 1,500 residents.
