Gated Effects Midi - Creating Tracks
This is a very cool trick you can use in the studio for creative inspiration or on stage for an exciting real-time MIDI gating effect that is sure to make your fans scream for more!
I should probably start by prefacing this video tutorial by saying that this is another one of those crazy things I sat down and figured out one day. Not sure if other folks are doing similar things out there or not, but it is definitely a fun one to use! And it's pretty easy to set up, so there really is no reason not to at least try it out and see how you like it. You may be surprised at just how many cool things you encounter along the way. I call it a MIDI gating effect, but you can call it whatever you like.
There are several variations on this MIDI gating effect workflow that I have tested and enjoyed, but this is the core concept in a nutshell. You run looping audio into a synth that allows for an external audio source via a side chain option. For this example we are using a synth called the ES1, which is a stock plug-in in Logic Pro. Next, you need some audio you would like to chop up in cool ways and use in your music. Lastly, you will need an open mind and the willingness to discover awesome new ideas. That's it!
Once you have your audio routed into the synth and the MIDI gating effect is functioning properly you can begin adding some effects to really transform it into something fun. I suggest mapping the wet/dry our output parameters of those effects to your MIDI controller to you can turn them on and off whenever you like without having to touch your computer again. Using effects is just one way to augment the audio you are using. Don't forget about the onboard tools of the synth you are routing that audio through! A simple filter cutoff sweep, with a touch of resonance, is always a crowd-pleaser.
