What is a seroma?
It is an accumulation of inflammatory fluid that the body is unable to eliminate. There is always a certain amount of fluid present after an inflammatory procedure that the body is able to absorb or manage. For example, when a person is injured, their body reacts, and when a person undergoes surgery, this creates a wound. Often, the body is unable to eliminate this inflammation, and it accumulates. Therefore, it is necessary to remove the fluid and puncture the wound to drain it. This is a very common condition inherent to the procedure. It is best to leave drains in place as a preventative measure. In my experience, it is very rare to leave drains in the breasts, but in lipectomies or liposuction, it is very important to do so because it is known that the body will not be able to eliminate all of that fluid on its own.
