This Desktop Environment changed my mind about lightweight Linux
In this episode of The Great Spin Experiment, I take my first proper look at the LXQt desktop environment. I went into this series thinking everything was about desktop environments, only to realise from your comments that window managers and desktop environments are very different things. That changed how I look at these spins completely.
LXQt surprised me. It is lightweight, responsive, and far more customisable than I expected. From changing wallpapers and themes to resizing panels, adding widgets, managing workspaces, and discovering how app favourites work, everything feels simple and flexible once you start exploring it.
I walk through how LXQt handles updates using DNF Dragora, how app discovery works, and what tools are included by default. There didnt appear to be a built in system monitor, no tiling window manager by default, and Wayland has some limitations, but the freedom to build the system exactly how you want is actually pretty cool.
Even running in a virtual machine, LXQt feels fast and stable. After only a short time using it, I could genuinely see myself running this as a daily desktop. It is functional, lightweight, and gets out of your way while still giving you control over how everything looks and behaves.
