1. Siamese cats are native to Thailand. So why are they called Siamese? Well, because Thailand was known as Siam before 1939 (and again from 1945 to 1949). The term “Siamese Twins” also comes Thailand. It was inspired by the brothers Eng and Chang Bunker, were joined at the chest.
2. Bangkok’s ceremonial name is Krungthepmahanakhon Amonrattanakosin Mahintharayutthaya Mahadilokphop Noppharatratchathaniburirom Udomratchaniwetmahasathan Amonphimanawatansathit Sakkathattiyawitsanukamprasit. The name, composed of Pali and Sanskrit root words, translates as: City of angels, great city of immortals, magnificent city of the nine gems, seat of the king, city of royal palaces, home of gods incarnate, erected by Vishvakarman at Indra's behest. The name is listed in Guinness World Records as the world's longest place name (169 letters).
3. One of the country’s most unusual festivals is the annual Monkey Buffet, held in front of the Pra Prang Sam Yot temple in Lopburi province. More than 600 monkeys are invited to feast on over two tonnes of grilled sausage, fresh fruit, ice cream and other treats. The locals see it as a thank you to the monkeys which inhabit the village and bring thousands of tourists there each year.
4. Red Bull, the world-famous energy drink, has its roots in Thailand. It is based on Krating Daeng, a drink made popular in Thailand (and eventually across Asia) since 1976. Red Bull was modified to “suit western tastes.”
5. Thailand is home to one of the world’s largest freshwater fish, the Mekong giant catfish, which can weigh up to 700lbs, as well as the world’s smallest bat, the bumblebee bat (or Kitti’s hog-nosed bat), which grows to a little over an inch and weighs two grams.
6. Thailand, in Thai, is Prathet Thai, meaning "Land of the Free." Before it adopted this name, the nation was called Siam, which is Sanskrit for “dark” or “brown.” "Land of the Free" is appropriate, because Thailand is the only country in Southeast Asia never to have been colonized by a foreign power.
7. It was in the 1970s that the sex industry began to flourish in Thailand. The flood of US GIs into Thailand during the Vietnam War was the single largest contributing factor to the sharp rise of the Thai sex industry. In Thailand, sex-trafficking is a $15 billion a year business. Trafficking within Thailand usually consists of Thai females, 12-16 year olds from hill tribes of the North East. Aproximately 610,000 people die each year from HIV/AIDS and it is currently the leading cause of death. Thailand's Health System Research Institute reported that children in prostitution make up 40% of prostitutes in Thailand.
