Serious illnesses or accidents can lead to the failure of one or more vital organs. At the intensive care unit of the University Hospital RWTH Aachen, it is possible to replace the function of some of these organs with machines. In some cases, this replacement can only be temporary until the affected organs have recovered. Dr. Jana Mossanen, Senior Physician at the Department of Surgical Intensive Care and Intermediate Care at the University Hospital RWTH Aachen, explains the different forms of organ replacement therapy, when they are used, and the associated risks and benefits in this video.
