The Red-backed Flameback, also recognized as the Lesser Sri Lanka Flameback, Sri Lanka Red-backed Woodpecker, or Ceylon Red-backed Woodpecker (Dinopium psarodes), is a distinctive bird belonging to the Picidae family. Endemic to Sri Lanka, it thrives across most regions of the country except for the far-northern areas. Initially categorized as Brachypternus ceylonus within the genus Brachypternus by Legge, it was later grouped as a subspecies of the Black-rumped Flameback (Dinopium benghalense) and formally identified as Dinopium psarodes through research by Sampath S. Seneviratne, Darren E. Irwin, and Saminda P. Fernando.
This species exhibits an intriguing trait of hybridization with the Black-rumped Flameback, notably concentrated in specific areas of Sri Lanka. The hybridization pattern demonstrates a border zone from Trincomalee to the base of Puttalam lagoon and another border from Mullaitivu to Mannar. North of the former border, the Black-rumped Flameback prevails, while the Red-backed Flameback dominates to the south. Interestingly, pure species tend to fare better than their hybrid counterparts, a phenomenon known as Hybrid inferiority.
Among the red-colored flamebacks exclusive to Sri Lanka and the Philippines, the Red-backed Flameback stands out as the sole red-colored member of the Dinopium species. Its crimson hue, accompanied by black-trimmed wings, white underparts marked with scattered black patterns, and distinct black eyestripe merging into the neck and back, contributes to its unique appearance. The red crown, contrasting with a black-speckled forecrown and forehead in females, and a concealed eye within the black eyestripe, further characterize this species. Juveniles exhibit a muted appearance with less conspicuous markings, while hybrids may display varying degrees of red or yellow tones akin to either the Red-backed or Black-rumped Flamebacks.
Notably measuring approximately 28 centimeters (11 inches) in length, this species lacks recognized subspecies. Its striking appearance and the fascinating phenomenon of convergent evolution in Sri Lanka and the Philippines, resulting in the red coloration of endemic flamebacks, signify an intriguing aspect of avian evolution.
