Nara’s deer are not just adorable; they are an integral part of the city’s charm and history. These deer are protected as national treasures and can be seen wandering through Nara Park and the surrounding areas. Feeding these deer is a must-do activity – you can purchase deer crackers (shika senbei) from vendors throughout the park. The deer have learned to bow to visitors in anticipation of receiving food, a behavior that’s both endearing and fascinating to watch.
Fun fact: there are over 1,200 deer in the park! Remember to be respectful and gentle with them as they are quite friendly and accustomed to human interaction.
