In this tutorial video, Dr. Watson explains how to use an audio interface to record a guitar signal. The demonstration includes both acoustic guitar (with pickup) recorded into a regular audio track and electric guitar recorded into GarageBand's special "Guitar" Track.
Featured in this video is the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 2-Channel (with preamps) USB audio interface. While I really like this particular interface, there are many fine 2-channel audio interfaces on the market. All of them work in relatively similar ways. You should be able to apply the concepts presented here regardless of what brand interface you are using.
