Is the Line 6 Helix Still Worth It in 2026? Modern Heavy Metal Preset Breakdown
The Line 6 Helix has been a go-to modeler for metal guitarists for years, but with so many new options on the market, does it still hold up? In this video, I build a modern heavy metal preset using nothing but stock Helix gear -- no third-party IRs, no plugins, just the Helix doing its thing.
We're running the Revgen Purple amp into the 4x12 CarTog GUV cabinet, blending an SM57 and a 121 Ribbon mic with a subtle mic delay trick that adds something interesting to the high end. Guitar is the LTD Viper Baritone with Fishman Fluence Modern pickups in the bridge position.
The main focus of this video is controlling low end inside the Helix -- something that becomes critical when you're double or quad tracking guitars for a metal mix. Too much low end buildup will kill your mix before you even start. I walk through several different methods for getting it under control:
Three-band compressor for low end compression
Split crossover at 150Hz feeding an LA Studio Comp on the low path only
Low and high shelf EQ
Tilt EQ centered at 550Hz
Each method is demoed so you can hear the difference and decide what works best for your rig and playing style.
The preset will be made available for download. HX Stomp users -- the core tone should translate, but you may run into snapshot limitations given how many snapshots are packed in here.
