How To Increase Your Starting Salary By $10,000
You can get a 10% increase in your salary, by asking the right two questions correctly at the exact right time. But if you don’t negotiate, if you just accept the first offer you are given, you will miss out on thousands of dollars.
As PhDs, most of the time, especially if it's our first job in industry, we've never seen that many zeros on a salary before. We're like, wow, finally somebody's offering me what I'm worth. And you don't want to miss out on it, so you have the fear of loss. You forgot your value, you forget that other people who have been given an offer for that job have likely been offered more.
So what can you do to increase your salary? The first when you get the offer, express your excitement, but remain reserved and say, "I'm gonna go home and review it." Then, once you actually have an offer on paper. Once you do, take a look at the numbers, you can say, "I really appreciate this, the numbers don't look quite right. Is there anything more you can do in terms of salary?"
