What if the Soviet Union had joined NATO?
Now NATO is the world's premier military alliance, designed to ensure world peace and so on. But you probably don't know that NATO was created as a sort of counterweight to the military threat posed by the USSR and the socialist bloc countries, which mushroomed on the country's geopolitical map after World War II. At the time, the Soviet Union, logically, took the creation of NATO as a personal insult, and that was true, of course. Despite this, the Soviets even tried to join NATO, which I'll discuss later, but were logically turned down. It's like building a fortress to protect against the enemy, only to then let that same enemy in simply because they asked. It's stupid as hell. But still, if the Soviet Union had managed, by hook or by crook, to join NATO, what would have happened? Would NATO have collapsed, would the Soviet Union have collapsed, or would something else have happened? I'd be interested to hear the answer to that question. Well, then don't skip the video, and I'll tell you several possible scenarios. Let's go.

Real-life relations between the USSR and NATO. How the USSR Could Join NATO
NATO was created on April 4, 1949, when the North Atlantic Treaty was signed, stipulating that an attack on one NATO member was considered an attack on all NATO members. As I've already mentioned, the main reason for NATO's creation was essentially the so-called Red Scare and the already well-established Cold War.
Naturally, the Soviet Union itself understood the true reason for the creation of the North Atlantic organization, and during the process of NATO's creation, even explored the possibility of joining. But, quite naturally, all these explorations came to nothing. After that, the question of cooperation between the USSR and NATO faded into the background of world politics for several years. Everything changed in the spring of 1953, after Stalin's death, when an unprecedented opportunity arose for mutual understanding between Western countries in general and NATO in particular and the Soviet Union. But this opportunity was missed due to the United States, the leading power in NATO,'s lack of confidence in the Soviet leaders' desire for change, and the Soviet leaders themselves, who were too indecisive in the immediate aftermath of Stalin's death, were unsure of the course they should take. In short, the chance for a normalization of relations and constructive interaction, including between the USSR and NATO, was squandered.
Then, out of the blue, in March 1954, Soviet leaders sent a request to NATO to accept the USSR as a full member, especially considering the fact that NATO member countries had assured the Union that this military organization was in no way directed against the USSR. But in reality, things were not quite so, or even completely so. Therefore, the Soviet Union was denied, and it was glad about it. After all, the Kremlin had hatched a cunning plan: either they join NATO and ultimately destroy it from within, since, understandably, none of the Kremlin leaders believed in NATO's neutral stance, or they are rebuffed, and they create their own version of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, with Lenin's legacy and the ideology of socialist Marxism.
