In the fourth episode of Duke Nukem 3D: Atomic Edition, titled "The Birth," the 9th level, "Derelict," stands out as one of the toughest and most complex levels in the game. Set aboard a damaged, oil tanker-style ship named Valdeez-2, the level draws inspiration from the real-life Exxon Valdez disaster of 1989, when the tanker ran aground due to the captain's excessive drinking. The captain’s room in the game features liquor bottles and a bed, further emphasizing this connection.

"Derelict" challenges players with its intricate design and sheer length, surpassing even Episode 2's notoriously difficult "Dark Side" (Mission 8). Navigating through the wreckage of the ship, players encounter tight corridors, underwater sections, and tough enemy encounters, requiring both skill and patience. The atmosphere is grim, with debris-filled rooms and the ship’s malfunctioning systems adding to the sense of danger. The layout encourages exploration, with many areas hidden behind secret doors and passageways, but also makes it easy to get lost in the maze-like structure.

With its environmental storytelling, Derelict not only tests the player's combat skills but also adds a layer of real-world reference, making it a memorable and historically charged level in Duke Nukem 3D.
