On August 6, 1996, Chechen fighters under the command of Aslan Maskhadov launched Operation Jihad, storming Grozny, Argun and Gudermes. The Chechens caught the Russian troops by surprise, blocking them in the capital. Residents of Grozny joined the fighters, intensifying the offensive.
