And the sage said to him:
"I have fulfilled my duty. I have learned the teachings of the great sages and created my own teaching. I will remain in this house for a short time; now it is my destiny to teach others." But since I promised to bring wisdom to your home, I will keep my promise and stay with you for a day. During this time, I will impart to you, my younger brother, the wisest truths.
Here is the first: all people should live in a beautiful garden.
Wiping his feet with a clean, beautifully embroidered towel, the younger brother fussed, trying to please his elder brother, and said to him:
"Try this! On the table before you are the fruits of our garden; I myself have picked the best for you." The sage ate the varied and beautiful fruits thoughtfully and continued:
"It is essential that every person living on Earth cultivate their own family tree. When they die, the tree will remain a fond memory for their descendants. It will also purify the air for their descendants to breathe. We all must breathe good air."
The younger brother hurried, fussed, and said:
"Forgive me, my wise brother, I forgot to open the window so you could get some fresh air."
He pulled back the curtains, opened the window, and continued: “Here, breathe in the air of two cedars. I planted them the year you left. I dug one hole with my shovel
for the seedling, and for the second, I dug a hole with your shovel, the one you played with in our childhood.” The sage gazed thoughtfully at the trees, then said:
“Love is a great feeling. Not everyone is destined to live their life with love. And wisdom is great—everyone should strive for love every day.”
“Oh, how wise you are, my elder brother!” exclaimed the younger. “You have learned great wisdom, and yet I feel lost before you. Forgive me, I haven’t even introduced you to my wife,” he cried, turning to the door: “Old woman, where are you, my cook?”
The sage remained pensive for a long time. His reverie was interrupted by the sound of children’s voices. The sage heard them and said:
"Every man must strive to attain great wisdom. How to raise children to be happy and just."
"Tell me, wise brother, I long to make my children and grandchildren happy. You see: here they come, my noisy grandchildren." Two boys no older than six and a girl of about four stood in the doorway, arguing among themselves.
The sage was silent. The sage realized... he stood up and said:
"You remember, my younger brother, my father's old chisel and hammer? Give them to me, I want to carve my main lesson on the stone. I'm leaving now. I probably won't return. Don't stop me, don't wait for me." The elder brother left. The gray-haired sage and his disciples approached the stone; the path curved around it. A path that called travelers seeking wisdom to lands far from their home. The day passed, night fell, and the gray-haired sage hammered away, carving an inscription on the stone. When the exhausted gray-haired old man finished, his disciples read the inscription on the stone:
"What do you seek, wanderer? You carry everything with you,
and find nothing new, you lose with every step."
