Fig-leaved pumpkin is cultivated throughout Latin America. Its center of origin has not been precisely determined. Various researchers suggest Peru, Mexico, and Argentina as possible locations. Currently, it is also cultivated in various parts of Eurasia: from France to India and Japan.
Fig-leaved pumpkin seeds are rich in protein and fat and are often used in desserts. Unripe fruits are eaten boiled. Mature fruits have a sweet taste and a pleasant aroma, reminiscent of watermelon, and are used in confectionery and beverages, including alcoholic ones. Flowers, leaves, and young shoots are often used as green vegetables.
