Intro to World War II
World War II (WWII or WW2), also known as the Second World War, was a global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945. It involved most of the the world's countries—including all the great powers—forming two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis.
In a state of total war, directly involving more than 100 million personnel from more than 30 countries, the major participants threw their entire economic, industrial, and scientific capabilities behind the war effort, blurring the distinction between civilian and military resources. World War II was the deadliest conflict in human history, resulting in 70 to 85 million deaths, with more civilians than military personnel killed.
Tens of millions of people died due to genocides (including the Holocaust), premeditated death from starvation, massacres, and disease. Aircraft played a major role in the conflict, including in strategic bombing of population centers, and the only uses of nuclear weapons in war.
December 7th (1941); a date which will live in infamy
-The attack on the naval base at Pearl Harbor was seen as premeditated (aka-planned); it was an ACT OF WAR by the Japanese.
-In response to Pearl Harbor, FDR asks Congress to declare war on Japan on December 8, 1941. REVENGE for the deaths of 2K Americans.
-Germany & Italy; due to their alliance with Japan, declare war on the U.S. 4 days later.
-The U.S. is now fighting a war on two fronts; Europe & the Pacific.
-FDR tells the American people that the US is fighting a war to protect FREEDOM & DEMOCRACY
MS St Louis (1939)
-Hitler blamed the Jews for Germany’s defeat in WWI. Led to Anti-Semitism in Europe
-Thousands of Jewish Refugees attempted to flee Europe & the Nazis.
-(1939) A group of German Jews sailed to Cuba on the St. Louis (a cruise ship). Cuba wouldn’t accept them.
-Sailed to Miami; Fed Gov’t refused to accept the Jewish passengers due to strict immigration quotas . Made no exceptions for refugees
-Forced to sail back to Europe; most of the passengers later died in concentration camps.
The Office of Wartime Information
-The OWI created various forms of propaganda (aka-posters, news reels, pamphlets) in support of the U.S. war effort.
-Propaganda was used to convince the public that their personal SACRIFICE was important to winning the war.
-Your PATRIOTISM was directly related to your level of SACRIFICE.
-The OWI convinced Americans to grow VICTORY GARDENS so that farmers could focus on feeding the military.
-Americans were asked to conserve important resources like oil, rubber, sugar & fuel.
-Young men were told that the only honorable thing to do was to join the military.
Propaganda
The Office of War Information was in charge of maintaining popular support for the war. Many propaganda posters and slogans that were used to encourage Americans to support the war effort

-The Fed. Gov. used propaganda (e.g.-posters) to convince women to contribute to the war effort.
-Rosie the Riveter was the fictional star of a campaign aimed at recruiting female workers for the defense industry (producing war materials.
-Rosie was a cultural icon to six million woman that worked in the factories.
-Between 1940-1945, the percentage of women working outside the home increased from 27 to 37%
Victory Gardens
-The Fed Gov’t increased farm production (in the US) to feed a wartime military in Europe & the Pacific.
-The meant that less food would be available for Americans at home.
-One solution was for Americans to plant “victory garden” and grow a portion of their own food.
-Victory gardens provided American citizens an opportunity to support the war effort
-The Fed Gov’t also limited the amount (aka-rationed) of food that citizens could buy.
WAR Bonds
-War Bonds were sold in the United States to support the war effort in Europe and the Pacific
-WWI Liberty Bond=WWII War Bond
-A war bond was a small loan that people made to the U.S. Gov’t with the promise of being paid back with interest.
-The Fed Gov’t would then use the additional funds to finance the U.S. war effort overseas
-Purchasing a WAR Bond became the duty of every patriotic American.
-If you can’t enlist, you MUST invest
The War Production Board
-The War Production Board (aka-gov’t agency) oversaw the wartime mobilization of the American economy.
-WPB supervised the conversion of civilian industries to wartime production.
-Factories began making tanks, “Liberty Ships”, and other wartime goods.
-Vital resources (like gas and aluminium) were rationed to ensure enough was available for military needs
-Wartime production took priority over civilian needs.
Essential Goods (like rubber and fuel) were rationed so that excess supply could be sent to soldiers overseas.
