Elementary teachers our goal is to help our students to build their math minds, NOT create calculators.
For far too long we have associated ‘fluent’ with ‘fast’, but being fast at math does NOT mean you are fluent with math. It’s hard when every math assessment we give kids in elementary school has some kind of speed associated with it. Plus, every grade from Kindergarten to 6th grade has a standard that kids need to be ‘fluent’ with something.
But, when we focus on just getting kids to be FAST at math, they aren’t going to be truly fluent.
With anything in life there are three parts to being fluent.
