World Maritime Day 2025: Africa’s Ocean Opportunities and Challenges
The 2025 World Maritime Day, themed “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity”, highlights the vital role oceans play in global trade, food security, employment, and climate regulation. With over 80% of international trade transported by sea, shipping plays a central role in protecting marine environments and sustainably managing ocean resources. Dr Olalekan Elegbede, Blue Economy Expert and Advisory Member of the Ocean Enterprise Initiative and Marine Technology Society, USA, shares insights on what this theme means for Africa—covering blue carbon, inclusivity, and the policy and institutional frameworks needed to fully harness the continent’s ocean potential.
