Brandon Rees on fighting David Nyika again, dealing with Southpaws, sparring Floyd Masson | Super 8
The New Zealand team to compete in the first leg of the Super Eight to be held in
Auckland 15 – 17 March 2019, is headlined by Commonwealth Games double Gold
medallist David Nyika and Commonwealth Games Bronze medal winner Tasmym Berry.
The Super Eight Trans-Tasman competition, involves teams of eight boxers representing
South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and New Zealand. The host of each Super
Eight leg, selects a team of four male and four female boxers, with the other teams
matching the weight divisions.
During the three days of competition, each boxer will box three times in round robin
competition, against his/her opponents in the their designated weight division.. The
Auckland Super Eight, will be held at the Auckland Boxing Association headquarters at
their Eden Terrace gymnasium.
Current Commonwealth Games Heavyweight Champion David Nyika needs little
introduction and has already rubber-stamped his credentials, as one of the best amateur
boxers produced in New Zealand, since the inception of the sport in 1902.
At just 23 years of age, with two Commonwealth Games Gold medallions in his keeping,
the boxing deeds of David should make an inspiring read for future generations of aspiring
boxers in New Zealand.
Nyika is likely to receive just the type of competition at the Super Eight competitions, that
he requires at the start of the season, as he builds up to the years pinnacle event of the
AIBA Men’s World Championships in Russia during September 2019
Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Tasmyn Benny, re-inked her ranking as the
number one Women’s Flyweight boxer in the country, at the BNZ Elite Trials in February
2019. Tasmyn defeated 2017 National champion Katie Thompson in the opening bout on
the card. Benny took it to her opponent from the outset, to be rewarded with a unanimous
point’s decision from the five judges.
Manawatu 57kg boxer Amy Andrew earned a berth at the Auckland Super Eight, after
defeating 2018 National Champion Tegan Burdett-Clarke, with a split decision victory at
the BNZ Trials. Current National titleholders Troy Garton and Chei Kenneally, will round
out the Kiwi women’s representation at the Auckland Trans-Tasman contests.
National Light Welterweight Champion Tui Vea, has shown his dedication to succeed in
his chosen sport by dropping two weight divisions, to box in the Featherweight division.
National Light Heavyweight titleholder Jerome Pampellone will be extremely competitive in
his class, with Emile Richardson who impressed at the Elite Trials taking the Middleweight
berth.
