On 04/15/22 Naugatuck Police responded to a 2 car accident in the area of Prospect Street and Union Street. Once officers arrived on scene, they found heavy front end damage on an unoccupied red Toyota Camry. The driver, and any potential passengers of this vehicle had left the scene. In the Camry, officers observed a child car seat in the backseat, and witness statements informed officers that when the driver of the Camry left the scene, he was seen removing something from the back seat. Additional officers responded to assist in the search for a potentially injured driver and child. As the investigation progressed, officers discovered that the driver of the vehicle was identified as Austin Cyr (Age 26) and had a warrant for his arrest. Officers successfully located the object that Austin had removed from the rear of the vehicle, which was not a child but his mother’s dog, that was found tied to the fence behind a residence in the area. Officer Kosky and K9 Tommy were called in to track Austin, and began tracking behind the residences on the South side of Prospect Street. K9 Tommy successfully led officers to Austin’s location, where he was hidden under a tarp and inside of a large plastic garbage bin. Austin was taken into custody without incident, and was charged with the following;
C.G.S. 14-224(b)(3) Evading Responsibility Resulting in Injury and/or Property Damage
C.G.S. 14-240(d)(2) Following Too Closely
In addition, Austin was processed for his original warrant for violation of CGS 53A-173 Failure to Appear.
At the time of this release Austin is being held on a combined $5,000 surety bond, he will appear in GA4 Waterbury Superior Court on Monday 04/18/22 at 0900 hours.
We are thankful no one was injured in this motor vehicle accident, and thank the community for their cooperation which helped lead our officers to successfully and safely locate those involved.
