Submitted for the Write The World Spoken Word Poetry competition (well, the second bit was)

So there was this spoken word poetry competition I saw on Instagram and I thought "yup there's a feasible chance of me winning this" so I filmed this thing. I didn't win and I believe I was robbed of my victory for best performance but this poem was actually highly commended so yeah what can I say. In all honesty, this poem was written as a joke but I do think that it brings a new level of performance into spoken word poetry and there's a space for light-hearted poems as well as deep sad ones that's often overlooked. Cough cough
Okay hear me out: poetry doesn't have to be inherently serious and edgy and there have been many silly, comedic poems like Michael Rosen's beloved style of poetry. I wanted to do something different because I feel that life isn't all serious and edgy either and it does us good to laugh every once in a while too. There is no formula for poetry and likewise no guideline it should have to meet to be considered "good"
^Wrote that to the judges and apparently it worked

I swallowed my cat
I shone my laser pen
Right into my mouth
It jumped in there and then

I swallowed my cat
Let out a little squeak
Had to add some salt
The flavour was too weak

I swallowed my cat
I can hear it purr
My tumbly's going rumbly
And I'm coughing up fur

I swallowed my cat
I called up the vet
They said how'd it taste
I said like baguette

I swallowed my cat
I don't even know how
It's never coming out
Meowed it's last meow

I swallowed my cat
He's Canadian
He burst out my chest
Like an Alien

I swallowed my cat
Or so I thought
It's staring back at me
Looking quite distraught

I swallowed my cat
Now it wants revenge
I try to surrender
But it grabs a wrench
