This video explores how Raymond Chandler focuses on the depiction of his characters to drive the plot of The Long Goodbye. Famously deriding the idea of the detective novel as a 'puzzle' to be 'solved', Chandler presents a study of American society in which people who apparently have everything - fame, riches, beauty - can still ruin it all. For Chandler, the outlines of their character is what brings about this downfall. His hero, Philip Marlowe recognises this, and it makes him angry, but in the end there is nothing he can do to save people from themselves.
