According to the GRU special forces methodology, basic training for a reconnaissance saboteur is conducted in three interconnected ways. The first is barracks training: classes in classrooms, on a "reconnaissance trail," in a physical training camp, and at a shooting range.
The "reconnaissance trail" is a section of terrain equipped with obstacles and barriers commonly encountered in combat.
During training, reconnaissance personnel acquire skills in stealthy, silent movement with weapons and equipment over a distance of one kilometer, overcome complex obstacles, learn to operate skillfully in trenches and communication passages, and in destroyed buildings. They also practice hand-to-hand combat, grenade throwing, and sentry removal techniques. Fires, combat sounds, booby traps, and "surprises" are all simulated.
