Dr. Mikhail Higgins, Interventional Radiologist at Family Medicine Center told Megan Shepherd, Our News that women of African Caribbean descent are genetically predisposed to fibroids.

Major symptoms of fibroids can include bloating, constipation, a constant urge to urinate, and pain during intimacy.

While these symptoms can start as early as age 15, Dr. Higgins told Our News that they typically present in women between the ages of 30 and 50.

Avoiding acidic foods that promote inflammation and rapid cell turnover can, in some cases, help to limit symptoms.

For women seeking treatment, there is a new alternative to traditional surgery now available in The Bahamas - uterine fibroid embolization.
