How to manually install MikTex packages (English subtitles!)

Do you need to install MikTex packages manually, because the repositories are down?
You have no clue as to what's a texmf tree?
You're getting a 'Not a TDS-compliant root directory.' error?
You don't know what to do with a .ins file in a MikTex package?
This tutorial attempts to answer these questions. I'm no expert with LaTex, but I did get what I needed up and running by manually installling various packages. It was such a complex process, with bits of information spread across many different sites, that i thought it would be nice to show what I did in tutorial form.
If somebody identifies a bad practice, error or any other mistake in the way I did things, please tell us in the comments.
