Back Garden Tour July 2021 | NEW RAISED BED EXPANSION REVEAL!! Gravel Patio is Completely Installed!
After MONTHS of work, our raised bed garden expansion is completely installed and WE LOVE IT! This expansion will double our garden size which makes me so happy. I love that we are using gravel in the garden. It has such a lovely clean look. There is still much to do, of course, but I believe the most difficult work is behind us. What a relief!
I sowed seeds in the original raised beds early last month those beds have taken off as the temperatures have climbed. Our Southern California heat has definitely arrived, so I'll need to keep a very close eye on the garden and may have to adjust the (also newly expanded) drip irrigation.
I've finally got many of my berry plants in containers that are more well suited for them to thrive and grow. Also, I'm loving growing vertically on arbor trellises -- it's a real game changer and is helping me fit more plants into my raised beds. Besides that, I'm finding the plants are easier to tend to and I'm fairly certain that growing vertically will make harvesting easier too.
I didn't really talk about it, but I also grow heirloom tomatoes plants close to each other because rather than using cages, I like to train my tomatoes onto tall stakes and keep them well pruned, removing both low branches, and those that grow inward toward the other plants. (This helps with air circulation.) I also remove spent branches and suckers that sprout up between lateral branches and the main vine.
Now the challenge before I make next month's video is to see how much I can actually accomplish if the heat gets worse. See you next time!

ABOUT MY CHANNEL:
My channel is mostly about the DIY transformation of our long neglected suburban 1950s era ranch style home. It has been undergoing a re-design and makeover of the front and back gardens with much of the work being done by yours truly - me! But I can't complain because I really do enjoy the process and I've always loved a good do-it-yourself project (or in this case projects). Also, because my budget is pretty tight, you'll see that besides doing the work myself (with help from my hubby) I often work with sale or clearance plants and items or sometimes things that have been thrifted or re-purposed to help stretch my gardening dollars.
We’re located in Sunny Southern California, USDA Hardiness Zone 10a (where it sometimes seems as if we have no change of seasons and it’s just hot all the time!)
