This documentary traces more than a thousand years of Russian history, from the earliest settlements on the Eurasian steppe to the present day. It follows how geography, repeated invasion, and political choices shaped a civilization that has repeatedly returned to a similar answer when facing external threat: security requires depth, and depth often leads to expansion.

The narrative draws on the work of historians including Serhii Plokhy, Orlando Figes, Timothy Snyder, Robert Conquest, Anne Applebaum, Dominic Lieven, and Fiona Hill. Where scholarly debate exists, it is presented as debate rather than settled conclusion. Estimates and figures are attributed to the historians and research they come from.

The conflict in Ukraine is approached through historical and structural analysis, distinguishing between the logic used by decision-makers and the consequences of those decisions. Where the historical record is incomplete, uncertain, or contested, that uncertainty is stated directly.

This is a long-form, sleep-friendly history documentary designed for calm and continuous listening.
