Can Our HL15 2.0 Handle Dozens of IP Camera Streams? Let’s Find Out with Frigate!
Ever wondered how many IP camera feeds your server can handle before it taps out? In this video, we’re putting our HL15 2.0 to the ultimate test — simulating a heavy surveillance workload by feeding it multiple 1080p/30fps RTSP streams through Frigate. We’re pushing this setup to its limits using both CPU-only and GPU-accelerated decoding, and this is just the beginning.
We're kicking off a new experiment here at 45HomeLab where we explore real-world performance on high-end Homelab hardware. This time, we’re diving deep into Frigate NVR, a powerful open-source solution for object detection and camera monitoring — and running it inside Docker on a seriously specced HL15 2.0 build.
Our Test Bench Includes:
CPU: AMD EPYC 7452 (32 cores / 64 threads)
RAM: 128GB ECC DDR4
GPU: NVIDIA RTX 4060 Low Profile
Storage: ZFS on 10x 18TB Seagate EXOS
Motherboard: ASRock ROMED8-2T/BCM with dual 10G NICs
PSU: 1000W Corsair for plenty of headroom
Feeder System: Dual 2.5G Ethernet streaming RTSP via ffmpeg
We’ve pulled together a wide range of test footage — from urban streets to rainy farmlands — and turned them into simulated camera streams to stress-test Frigate in different environmental conditions. Using ffmpeg, we downscaled all videos to 1080p/30fps and looped them from a secondary system across our network.
The goal? To answer some key questions:
How many concurrent IP camera streams can Frigate realistically handle?
What bottlenecks appear first — CPU, GPU, network, or storage I/O?
How does performance shift when switching from CPU to GPU decoding?
How well does the HL15 2.0 manage real-time recording and object detection at scale?
This video is laying the foundation — we’re walking you through the hardware, software, networking setup, and why Frigate + HL15 2.0 is such a killer combo for serious Homelab enthusiasts, DIY security pros, and open-source system builders.
Coming up in Part 2: We’ll keep scaling up the number of streams and dive into configuration tips, tools, and tuning strategies to optimize Frigate's performance for your exact setup.
