Advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) are being deployed by utilities worldwide. The performance of these systems, their reliability, and consumer trust of the systems are crucial to the utility business. There are many challenges that must be addressed. Solid-state metering and communication technologies of AMI are new and evolving rapidly, and the methods for optimizing their utilization and value are still developing. Investments in AMI are among the largest being made by utilities, resulting in a need for high-quality asset management throughout the system lifecycle. Present systems are largely custom-designed or proprietary, rather than adhering to standards, resulting in vendor lock-in, heightened risk of obsolescence, and lack of interoperability.
