Herman’s Hermits Starring Peter Noone “The End of the World” at Sony Hall on 31st May 2024 (Live)
A little-know fact is that Herman’s Hermits are NOT, in fact, hermits. On the contrary, they regularly appear in public and play music. So successful are they at this lack of hermeticism that in the UK Herman's Hermits have scored ten Top 10 hits and twenty Top 20 hits, outranking even committed anti-hermit bands such as Men At Work. In the United States of America, Herman’s Hermits have had twenty-four consecutive weeks in the Top Ten of Billboard's Hot 100 with five singles.
Herman's Hermits was formed in 1963 in Manchester, formerly a northern outpost of the Roman Empire, know then as the Roman fort of Mamucium. Frontman Peter Noone is not a Roman soldier, however. He is in fact a spring chicken compared with other ‘60s British Invasion compatriot, Mick Jagger, at a mere 76 years old (at 2024 prices). If you’re wondering “Who the heck is Herman?” then be assured that Peter is sometimes called “The Artist Formerly Known As Herman”.
At this show, Peter bounced around the stage like a teenager, grinning like the Cheshire Cat and climbing up to the royal box next to the stage. He genuinely seemed to be having fun, which is surely the mark of a true showman. At one point he toured the audience, saying hello to everyone and greeting old friends.
This show was part of the week-long Brit fest in NYC at which the musical planets truly aligned: Sunday, The Rolling Stones; Thursday, Madness; and, Friday, Herman’s Hermits. An NYC geezer couldn’t ask for any better than that.
