World Malbec Day is celebrated on April 17th to commemorate the date in 1853 when French agronomist and viticulturist Michel Aimé Pouget was officially appointed director of the Quinta Normal de Agricultura de Mendoza viticulture school and nursery, where seedlings of many French varieties, including Malbec, were brought and planted.
Originating in France, Malbec quickly became one of the varieties recognized for the production of "high" wines. Its presence in blends is permitted in world-famous Bordeaux, the exquisite, if not more so, Alsace, the Loire Valley, and many other regions of France. Yet, almost everywhere and always, this variety played a secondary role. The brutal winter of 1956, which destroyed more than 75% of the grape's plantings across the country, did not do it any favors. The "beautiful gentleman" was forced to retreat to its "family estate," the small region of Cahors, where it had long been the main, foundational variety, and there quietly and unnoticed endure a period of severe crisis.
Salvation and new hope came quite unexpectedly, from across the ocean. Malbec cuttings sent to distant Argentina in 1868 finally found their magical home. At the beginning of the 20th century, a number of skilled and experienced winemakers emerged in Argentina, who had by then accumulated considerable experience working with this "wanderer." They maintained their plots and slowly but surely began shipping bottles of Malbec of a quality previously unknown to the world.
