Northwich Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the county of Cheshire, and around 20 miles southwest of Manchester, is the town of Northwich.
Geographically, Northwich is situated in the heart of the Cheshire Plain, around the confluence of the River Weaver and River Dane. Its 'wich' suffix alludes to its long association with the salt industry going back to the Roman era. The Romans established a salt-producing settlement near here called Condate. The Anglo-Saxons would continue this trade, naming the town 'Northwich', helping to distinguish it geographically from other centres for salt production including Middlewich and Nantwich.
Just southeast of the town centre is the Parish Church of St Helen. This dates from the 14th century, with additions from the 15th and 16th centuries, and some 19th century restoration. The church is Grade I listed.
During the 1670s the local Smith-Barry family rediscovered salt beds in Northwich by accident whilst searching for coal. This brought about a revival of the industry in the town. This was aided by, first the navigation of the River Weaver, effectively connecting Northwich to Liverpool, and secondly the arrival of the Trent and Mersey Canal, allowing the salt to be transported further still.
As salt mining became more expensive, a new method was introduced involving pumping hot water through mines to dissolve it, and subsequently extracting it from the resultant brine. However, this weakened the mines and led to subsidence, and the loss of several buildings. The rebuilding work from the late 19th century featured the extensive use of timber-framed buildings due to their resistance to subsidence. This accounts for the town's unique architectural look to this day.
In 1863 the railway arrived in Northwich courtesy of the Cheshire Midland Railway. The station of today is situated on the Mid-Cheshire Line which runs between Chester and Manchester Piccadilly.
Famous people from Northwich include Tim Burgess, lead singer of The Charlatans (although born in Worsley).
